Summer at Carrig Montessori School

A Montessori summer

Summer at Carrig is both an introduction to the Montessori environment and a continuation for children who are currently enrolled. This mix gives returning children the opportunity to share their knowledge and experience while their new friends become comfortable in the classroom and community.

Rotating themes provide the base from which our summer activities grow. Children enjoy the familiarity of a consistent daily routine while looking forward to new experiences inspired by each unit of study.

Summer life at Carrig

The summer schedule mirrors much of our academic year, although the Montessori work cycle is often shortened to allow additional time for social and physical development. Our teachers lead children in a combination of indoor and outdoor activities including arts, crafts, music, creative movement, yoga, outdoor play and gardening.

Summer at Carrig is designed to feel familiar and relaxed while still giving children the independence, purposeful activity and sense of community that are central to the Montessori experience.

Sample summer themes

Each summer, rotating themes inspire hands-on projects, experiments, art, outdoor exploration, stories, and other activities throughout the program.

Butterflies

Children explore butterflies from around the world and the remarkable process of metamorphosis. We introduce concepts such as symmetry while looking closely at butterfly wings, then bring the learning outdoors with time in our private courtyard and nature walks through Cooper Park.

Water cycle and rainbows

Children explore the stages of the water cycle and how temperature can change the way water looks and feels. Experiments with water, light, and prisms introduce the science behind rainbows, while our water table and ice explorations provide opportunities for hands-on discovery.

Sea life

From conch shells and seahorses to the many creatures that make their homes underwater, children explore life beneath the sea through science, art, music, and stories. Ocean-inspired projects encourage children to discover the remarkable variety of the marine world.

Georgia O'Keeffe

Children take a close-up look at flowers through the eyes of Georgia O'Keeffe. Flower arranging, still-life painting, and even flower dissection combine art and nature as children explore the subject that captivated one of America's best-known artists.

Dinosaurs

Children travel back in time to explore the world of dinosaurs, learning about creatures from Tyrannosaurus rex to pterosaurs. Dinosaur-inspired art, stories, yoga, and movement give children different ways to imagine and investigate life in the prehistoric world.

Metamorphosis: frogs and butterflies

Children explore metamorphosis by observing both insects and amphibians. Classrooms may adopt caterpillars and tadpoles, giving children the opportunity to watch these animals transform over time into butterflies and frogs while learning about their different life cycles.

Hours and tuition

Summer at Carrig 2026 is offered as Half Day (8:30am–1pm), Standard Day (8:30am–3pm), and Extended Day (8:30am–6pm), and runs from Monday, July 6 through Friday, August 14. Parents may choose any combination of weeks, although there is a five week minimum.

When choosing fewer than 7 weeks, additional weeks may be added at any time for $445 (Half Day), $500 (Standard Day), or $625 (Extended Day) per week.

Summer at Carrig is offered only to current students and students enrolled for an upcoming academic year. Registration forms are made available to eligible families each spring.
